Music Exchange: Ecole de Musique visit : Friday 27th April 2018
We are organising a planned visit to Newtown by Ecole de musique Les Herbiers in April from Friday 27th April 2018 until Tuesday 1st May 2018.
Please note that the party will be arriving in two coaches. The Musicians coach will be arriving at 5.00pm on Friday 27th April and will be departing at 9.00am on Monday 30th April. This coach contains all the musicians and staff from the Ecole de musique Ville des Herbiers. The party comprises 5 Tutors; 30 adult musicians 22 Young musicians and the Les Herbiers Twinning Committee past President and his wife, 57 in total.
The Twinning Committee coach will also arrive on Friday 27thApril and will depart early morning on Tuesday 1st May. This coach contains all the Les Herbiers Twinning Committee members and accompanying adults from our twin town Les Herbiers, 50 in total.
Newtown Twinning Committee has been working with Montgomeryshire Youth Music, Michelle Martin and Sue Phillips along with Sarah Koffer of North Powys Youth Band, Greg Jenkins of Newtown High School and Ecole de musique Les Herbiers to organise this joint weekend of music. Many other local musical organisations have been lending their support and will also be contributing to the performances.
We are delighted to announce that we are now able to host all the visiting YOUNG MUSICIANS and the LES HERBIERS TWINNING PARTY. However we are still asking for help from local musicians to host ADULT MUSICIANS between the ages of 29 to 75. Golf exchange Golf des Alouettes and St Giles:
During the Music exchange visit two representatives of Golf Des Alouettes visited Newtown with the French party to set up golfing links between the two towns, no pun intended! Nathalie Orhan, Secretary of Golf des Alouettes and Thierry Van. Boxel were guests at St Giles and at Llanymynech courses. A big thank you to Bob Millard and Bill Brown our local golfers who organised the exchange and looked after our two French golfers and arranged their transport! The French and Welsh musicians jointly rehearsed all day on the Saturday and Sunday at the High School and were provided with food and refreshments by Newtown Twinning Association and Montgomeryshire Youth Music. Newtown Twinning also organised a short break from rehearsals, 35 young musicians 12-18 visited U-Strike on Saturday afternoon, many thanks to Muralee for accommodating their visit.Saturday evening Informal Musical evening:
The Saturday evening was held in the Elephant and Castle with 250 people listening to a series of musical performances by small groups of musicians from Les Herbiers and Newtown, this continued all evening. Performances during the evening were given by Maldwyn Strings; French Strings group; Ffonic and Musique Actuelle, a fantastic evening for all involved and one small way in which we can reward our host families! Many thanks to all these musical groups. Many thanks to the Elephant and Castle who provided a buffet for all. Presentations and thanks were made during the evening between Twinning Associations by Marie-The President of Comité de Jumelage du Pays des Herbiers and Catharyn Edwards Chair of Newtown Twinning Association. Newtown was presented with a fantastic box of chocolates with a musical theme made by Albert Chocolatier Les Herbiers and Newtown presented Les Herbiers with Welsh Dragon framed print by Lissie Spikes, supplied by No1 High Street Newtown. The Sunday evening was held at Newtown High School with 350 people watching a range of performances culminating in an amazing joint orchestral performance with 100 musicians performing Hallelujah, Ironman and Skyfall, a fantastic performance by over 100 musicians!! Presentations and thanks were made during the evening. Sue Newham our Mayor thanked all involved in the evening preparations and the weekend and both Musical organisations, Bruno of Ecole de Musique Les Herbiers and Sue Phillips of Montgomeryshire Youth Music made presentations. Coach 2 took the opportunity to visit N Wales on the Monday and experienced a fantastic day with excellent views. They were joined by some of our hosts and committee members.Sunday Afternoon visit to Powis Castle and Coed y Dinas:

A welcome reception was held at Newtown High School between 5.00pm and 6pm in the school hall for the two coaches and 108 visitors. Welcome speeches were given by Kate Rayner of NTA and our Mayor Sue Newham. Introductions for our French visitors to all our hosts. Light refreshments and soft drinks were provided. Hosts then took their French guests home for an evening meal. It was fortunate that the two coaches arrived at different times as this proved much easier to manage!!Bishops Moat Welsh Borders 10k walk:
