The Newtown Outdoor Festival 2022 will be held on 4th and 5th June. Come for an active, outdoor weekend of walking, cycling, canoeing, running, scouting, fishing, art and music. See preliminary programme below, put the dates in your diary.
Saturday, June 4th, 2022
Walking – free guided walks starting between 9 and 11 am, depending on distance and degree of difficulty, organized by Walking Newtown. These are open to all abilities and ages. No pre-booking will be necessary. Children under 16 need to be be accompanied by an adult.
Many of the walks will have a theme including; singing, art, Welsh, pub, train, dogs, etc.
In addition, 16 longer walks and several shorter town walks can be downloaded from the web site to enjoy any time.
Navigation – Introduction to map reading and navigation – Organized by Bryn Walking. Aimed at people with no, very little, or some experience. Places are limited and pre-booking is required – submit booking form on www.brynwalking.co.uk. Starting at 10 am with some introductory theory and tea and coffee. Then a navigated walk, through Barnfields to Coed Graig picnic stop here (bring your lunch), from there down to the Severn Way and back for debrief. It’s max 5km. The course will include an introduction to these areas:
Map scales and types of maps
Map orientation
OS Map legend
Pacing and timing
Grid references
Use of a compass and taking bearings
Equipment needed to be outdoors, maybe use of a group shelter for a bit of fun.
Cycling – Awaiting confirmation of the details of activities from Welsh Cycling and Hafren CC. Probably will include use of the Newtown mountain cycling track.
Canoeing/Kayaking training – 10 am and 1.30 pm. There are two approximately 2-hour “taster sessions” to introduce novices to canoeing and kayaking. All instructors and equipment will be provided by Welshpool Canoe Club with Newtown Paddlers. No experience necessary. Participants should register at the Oriel Davies hub one hour before the start time, as places will be limited by instructor and canoe numbers.
Fishing – Fly casting 2.00pm to 2.45pm and 3.00pm to 3.45pm. Each casting session will comprise approx. 15 mins demonstration and then 30 mins tuition. Equipment will be provided for those interested to have a go and that children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
Park Run – 9 am starting at Dolerw Park Bridge. This is the regular free 5k park run. Open to all to complete at your own pace, no experience necessary. If you haven’t joined them before, go to the web site, www.parkrun.org.uk/register/ and register in order to get your run timed.
Scouts – fires & events in front of Oriel Davies Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm. Information and demonstrations of scouting activities, including matchless fire lighting and knotting.
Bring a picnic and cook on their 3 fires – a rocket fire, a sawdust volcano fire & an altar fire.
Gardening – The Newtown Garden Club is a friendly group of garden lovers from Newtown and the surrounding area. They aim to help people enjoy gardening at every level from window box to large gardens. Visit their stall to find out about their programme of talks and garden visits. Buy plants locally grown by members. There will be a gazebo near the gallery from 11.00 to 15.00.
Ceilidh – In the evening, venue to be decided. This is a way to continue the active day and dance the evening away. Music by ffonic. Chargeable admission of £5.

Art Picnic – 12:00 till 14:00. Organized by Oriel Davies. Open to ages and abilities, suitable for families. Meet at the gallery for a fun guided art walk with professional artist. Explore, draw, paint and photograph the beautiful green spaces on our doorstep. Art materials provided. Bring a picnic or pre-book a picnic from the Oriel Davies Gallery café to be eaten during the walk.
